Privacy
Canine Care is a care diary for dogs, shared between the people looking after them. This page says what it keeps, where, and why. Last updated 1 October 2026.
What is kept
- Your name, from Sign in with Apple (or as you change it in the app). It is shown next to what you record, so everyone knows who gave the tablet. The app never asks for your email address.
- Your dogs’ care records: their details, medication, physio, meals, appointments, walk rules, emergency contacts you enter, and the diary of what was done and by whom.
- Photos you add to a diary entry or to an exercise (“how to do it”), and each dog’s picture. They are shrunk on your phone first and stored privately: only people you have shared that dog with can see them, and a walker’s or sitter’s web link shows only the exercise pictures. A photo you remove, or a dog you delete, takes its photos with it.
- A notification address for each of your devices, so the app can tell you when someone else records something.
- Roughly where you are, and on what: the country, region and nearest town your internet connection comes from (worked out by Cloudflare, never from GPS), and your phone model, iOS version and app version. Noted when you sign in and at most once a day after. It tells us where Canine Care is used and which phones to test on.
- Messages you send us from More → Send feedback, with the app and iOS version they were sent from, so we can reply to you inside the app. No email address is needed.
- Messages sent from the help page, and the email address you give there, if you want a reply by email. It is used only to answer you.
- Whether you have Canine Care Plus, and when it renews or ends, as confirmed by Apple, so the free version’s sharing limits (how many people can join a dog, how many web links) are applied correctly. Your purchase itself is handled by Apple; we never see payment details.
Adverts in the free version
When adverts are switched on, the free version shows a small banner from Google AdMob at the bottom of the screen. Canine Care Plus has no adverts.
- The first time, the app asks whether it may track you across other companies’ apps and websites (Apple’s “Allow tracking?” question). Only if you choose Allow are the adverts personalised, using your phone’s advertising identifier. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, the adverts are not personalised and Google’s own app identifier is turned off too. You can change this at any time in the iPhone’s Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Like any app advert, Google receives what it needs to show one and count it: your phone model and iOS version, your IP address (and so roughly where you are), and whether the advert was shown or tapped. Google’s use of this is covered by Google’s privacy policy.
- Nothing from your dogs’ records or diary is ever given to Google or any advertiser: not their names, conditions or medicines.
- In the UK and EU, after Apple’s question, Google asks for your consent, and no advert is requested without an answer that allows it. You can change your answer at any time in More → Advert privacy choices.
What is not kept
- What you type or say to fill in a form, and photos of medicine labels, are read on your phone and never sent anywhere.
- No precise location: the app never uses GPS. No contacts. The advertising identifier only if you allow tracking, and then only for Google’s adverts. No analytics services, and nothing is sold or shared with anyone for marketing. The only advertising is the banner described above.
Who can see it
Only people you invite to a dog, and anyone you send a helper link to (they see that dog’s day, not the whole history). Links can be turned off at any time.
What the people who run Canine Care see
To know how the service is used, we can see account names, when each account was made and last used, roughly where it is used (country and nearest town) and on what phone, and counts (how many dogs, diary entries and devices) and any feedback you send us. We do not look at your dogs’ details or diary.
Where it is kept
On Cloudflare’s servers, which run the app’s back end, and on your devices. Notifications go through Apple’s push service. The free version’s banner comes from Google. We keep encrypted backups of the database, for no more than 12 months, and use them only to recover from a mistake or failure.
Questions
Use More → Send feedback in the app, or the help page.
Deleting it
Accounts nobody uses are deleted. If Canine Care hasn’t been used on any of your devices for 90 days (not opened, and nothing recorded, even from the widget or a notification), your account is deleted, with a notification two weeks and two days before. Using it at any point keeps it. A dog someone else is still looking after in the app passes to them; otherwise it goes with its diary.
More → Delete my data erases every dog you own and its diary, and your feedback messages, and keeps your account so you can start again. More → Delete my account and data removes your account, every dog only you own and their records, your devices, your links and your feedback messages, and disconnects Sign in with Apple. Dogs shared with other owners stay with them. Anything you delete in the app is removed from the server straight away. It can remain in our encrypted backups until they expire, at most 12 months later, and is never restored from them except to recover the whole service.
